PEARL Activities and Accomplishments 2009-10

PEARL highlighted in new edition of Maki book
In late fall 2010, Peggy Maki will release a new edition of her book, Assessing for Learning: Building a Sustainable Commitment Across the Institution. In it, PEARL is highlighted as an example of an online assessment system that incorporates dialogue between programs and faculty reviewers.
External participation in PEARL grows
Creighton University in Omaha, Kansas State, Roosevelt University-Chicago, and the University of California-Irvine have committed to adopting PRISM, the CSU system on which PEARL is based. They hope to begin utilizing the reprogrammed .NET version of the software beginning in fall 2010. Institutional leads have met in-person and virtually on several occasions to share ideas and lessons learned. There is a plan to continue these cross-institutional collaborations in 2010-11.
Integrating accreditation and PEARL
Frauke Hachtmann in the College of Journalism and Mass Communication, worked with Jeremy Penn and Kelly Dick to program PEARL for course-level assessment in order to record data for use in their accreditation report due summer 2010.
Linda Young in the College of Education and Human Sciences, created a multi-year plan for assessing the learning outcomes required by Dietetics Program’s accreditor. Each year she focuses the program’s PEARL plan on two or three of the outcomes in order to cover all by their next review year in 2014.
Reprogramming PEARL
CSU continues to make great strides towards reprogramming the PEARL/PRISM system from ColdFusion to .NET and hopes to have the new version available for fall 2010. This new version will provide more flexibility for administrators and allow for greater local support.
College use of PEARL for ACE assessment
The University-Wide Assessment Committee (UWAC) voted to approve PEARL reporting templates that undergraduate departments and colleges will use to report their ACE assessment activities.
Division of Student Affairs continues to implement plans and report results in PEARL
In May, 2010, The DSA hosted a professional development workshop with guest speaker, Dr. Julia Wallace Carr from James Madison University: Assessing Student Learning and Development Outcomes.
In fall 2010, all colleges will continue to use PEARL to submit their biennial reports on their undergraduate assessment activities.
