Involvement of a diverse set of participants in our outcomes assessment processes can enrich our sense of appropriate aims and standards for learning. However, despite the existence of these various groups, faculty play the single most important role.
If assessment is to be successful faculty must take ownership of institutional assessment efforts. If all faculty who contribute to an educational program assist in precisely specifying the outcomes expected from that program, these expectations can assist each individual faculty member in maintaining teaching approaches that will achieve these goals.
In addition, increased communication within and among different units and external groups can potentially lead to further collaboration on other important campus priorities and goals. In other words, the individual contributions of each unit can assist the institution in defining new initiatives and priorities.
